Konkola Copper Mines Plc |
Konkola Copper Mines plc and Brazilian contractor U&M have commissioned a 300 tonne Komatsu truck and a Hitachi 5500 Excavator with a bucket capacity of 30 cubic metres to help with the expanding operations at Chingola Open Pits, F & D. |
At the commissioning ceremony, KCM Director Operations Mr Jeyakumar Janakaraj challenged U&M to help bring best-in-class operations to KCM which was looking to become a 500 000 tonnes/annum producer by 2011.
Mr Janakaraj said KCM was proud to be associated with a world-renowned operator like U&M and the company’s investment in such massive equipment, some of the biggest on the African mining scene, was a demonstration of its commitment to meeting the targets stipulated in its contract with KCM.
He urged the Nchanga Open Pits management team to work hand-in-hand with U&M to realise the full potential of the machinery.
U&M Site Manager Maurice Casara said his company was determined to meet the agreed targets to help KCM meet its ambition of producing 500 000 tonnes of finished copper by 2011.
U&M are one of two major mining contractors engaged by KCM this year as the company strives to raise output to 500 000 tonnes/annum under project called ‘Tubombe Tusunge’ initiative.
The other one is Moolmans of South Africa which is mining at COP A.
