The main objective of Environmental Management is to achieve environmental compliance with legal requirements, the Final Environmental Management Plans (FEMP) and attain world-class standards.
Final Environmental Management Plan (FEMP)
- It was approved by Environmental Council of Zambia in May 2001
- It covers Air quality, surface and groundwater quality, infrastructural degradation, soil contamination, waste management, archaeological sites, land use, deforestation and timber use, ecosystem etc.
- It covers management of action Plans with specific deadlines
Key Environmental Projects currently in progress
To ensure environmental stability, KCM is undertaking the following projects
- Recycling of water to reduce on fresh water intake
- Increasing Sulphur dioxide capture target to 75%
- Reducing Total Suspended Solids levels in mine water and effluent
- KCM has implemented programmes to reduce the consumption of indigenous timber in its operations through:
- Substitution of indigenous timber with plantation timber (75% timber used is plantation timber)
- Alternative materials such as concrete sleepers
