Environmental Management

The main objective of Environmental Management is to achieve environmental compliance with legal requirements, the Final Environmental Management Plans (FEMP) and attain world-class standards.

Final Environmental Management Plan (FEMP)

  • It was approved by Environmental Council of Zambia in May 2001
  • It covers Air quality, surface and groundwater quality, infrastructural degradation, soil contamination, waste management, archaeological sites, land use, deforestation and timber use, ecosystem etc.
  • It covers management of action Plans with specific deadlines

Key Environmental Projects currently in progress
To ensure environmental stability, KCM is undertaking the following projects

  • Recycling of water to reduce on fresh water intake
  • Increasing Sulphur dioxide capture target to 75%
  • Reducing Total Suspended Solids levels in mine water and effluent
  • KCM has implemented programmes to reduce the consumption of indigenous timber in its operations through:
    • Substitution of indigenous timber with plantation timber (75% timber used is plantation timber)
    • Alternative materials such as concrete sleepers

International Certification/Accreditation:
To develop framework and seek accreditation for ISO 14001
