Article Title: docs    CEO Challenges Managers
CEO Kishore Kumar has challenged managers to help shape the company's role in developing the nation, saying the pride of employees and the larger society in the way they related to KCM was most important.

Mr Kumar said all employees of KCM had a stake in ensuring that the company, the largest private-sector employer in the country with over 10 000 workers on its payroll, became stronger and played its part in the development of Zambia. Speaking at a management workshop held at Konkola, Mr Kumar reminded the participants they were working for a 'great' company that had existed for over 70 years. “The mere fact that this organisation has lasted 70 years is a strength in itself that should be harnessed to propel KCM to higher heights. KCM should relate with society and assist in its development,” he said. The theme for the workshop was; 'Building Capabilities – Growth Strategies' and the objective; 'To set the Vision, Mission and line thought for KCM'. Vedanta HR Group President A. Thirunavakkarasu said the vision set by the workshop should encompass the right perception the company wanted of itself, should be challenging, actionable and customer-focused. More importantly, he said, the vision should focus on results rather than processes. Mr Thirunavakkarasu said KCM needed to develop a high-performance culture and it was therefore important to define what the company's strengths and values were that had kept it going for the last seven decades. The vision should create a workforce that was engaged, energized and empowered to deliver to the expectations of all the company's stake-holders. Director Operations Jeyakumar Janakaraj said the vision should engender a sense of attachment, pride and ownership among the workforce as they chased the mission of producing 435 000 tonnes of finished copper per annum and markedly reduced costs of production (110 cents/pound in 2009 and even less in 2010). He said it was crucial to benchmark housekeeping, safety and environmental performance and emphasise the company's commitment to sustainable development. “To achieve these objectives, the right organisational structure has to be in place and as leaders, we must encourage and promote fresh thinking in the organisation,” said Mr Janakaraj. He observed that KCM had been sluggish in the areas of safety and environment in the last four years and fresh ideas were needed to bridge the gap. The workshop was attended by a select group of employees on the Stars of Business and Global Leadership Programme initiatives.
